Defibrillator Progress Report

The committee met last Wednesday and will make an offer of a defibrillator to 12 applicants out of 45 in total including the radio competition. Six groups will be invited to share a defibrillator because of closeness of location.

Four offers will be made to regional towns who have no rapid ambulance access.  The offers were made on the basis of location, access to defibrillator, number of persons at the location and whether the organisation was community based or was commercial.

Currently, we are notifying applicants and processing funds for the procurement of funds and delivery of the units. An application for a district grant is being prepared to continue the work to date. We are meeting with local businesses to seek funding support for another round of assistance to worthy clubs and organisations that we were unable to support this time round.

The cost per unit is $2450 so the nine units will amount to $22050.  The funds that the organisations have been prepared to supply are $10,775. Club funds available for the supply of the units are $15,874.75.  This leaves funds remaining for usage at $4,599.75.

Procurement and delivery of the units and public advertisement will hopefully be completed by the end of next week. Members can follow  Defib for life Wagga facebook page to follow the posts being put up over the next few weeks.
The committee has been under the chair of Travis Downie who has put in an enormous amount of time and effort and believes that a fantastic result has been achieved so far.

President's Report July 19th
Just when you thought I had moved on......
President Geoff was attending to important aviation business today and asked me to run the Board and weekly meeting (together with my feather duster).  Geoff is picking up his new aircraft - a Beechcraft Bonanza.
We had the first Board meeting for the year this week and several important matters were discussed.
  • Jim Gibson (on behalf of Treasurer David Pyke) pointed out clearly that without successful monthly markets our Community income is 'lumpy' which could impact on regular donations.  On the positive side we have pre-registrations for Gears & Beers of around $700 pw at present which helps.
  • We received two resignations from the Club - Richard Braid and Josh Walsh - both have found that work commitments prevent them giving 100% to the club and have felt it better to re-join when time permits.  We wish them both well for the future and thank them for their contribution to the Club.
  • Youth- our RYPEN activity is going well thanks to Darren Wallace and Daniel Burns.  And our Noel Barnes Scholarship is to be 're-awarded' as Wagga High School principal, Mick Powell has felt the original recipient has not kept up her side of the requirement for this Scholarship.
  • There are new Guidelines for running the BBQ at the Sprout & About market - see below for details.
  • All Committee Chairs are urged to upload to Club Runner any Manuals and Documents relevant to their committee - we need to capture the relevant information in a central location for future reference - as we don't want the situation where a member might do 'a runner' and leave us without relevant procedures for vital Club activities.
  • Markets - the Board have agreed to continue supporting the Sprout & About market (and Special markets) on the current basis.  Although many markets are suffering at present we believe we may well be the last group standing' and should continue to operate when others commercial operations have to close down.
  • We have chosen not to register the business name "Wagga Wagga Sunday Markets"
  • And the Board is in discussions with the City Council regarding the possible purchase of the land in North Wagga where our trailers are housed.  This may provide us with more control over this important Community Asset.
  • Finally Travis Downie and his AED project team have decided on the successful applications for a defibrillator.  We have allocated funds to 9 organisations from 35 applications - see the report from Peter Crozier below.
And finally a date for your Calender - our Christmas Party will be held on Sunday 4th December at the Murray's home.  Paul and Carolyn have kindly offered to host the Club event this year.  They have a lovely home at Gelston Park - overlooking Wagga.  The views are stunning and certainly well worth the trip out of town.

Geoff Hamilton (feather duster).

Secretary's Report
I'm lucky that my ascendance to this job has been facilitated by 2 Fellowship meetings in a row without a market so I am getting in the swing of it. PLEASE all Directors or Committee Chairmen ensure you can upload your report to the proper place in Club Runner. If you dont know how speak to me or Paul Murray NOW to get a lesson.

My thought for the week was      "" A never failing way to get rid of someone is to tell them something for their own good"".

Please pay your fees asap as we seem to be a little cash flow poor, and please also ensure you are being pro-active in all your club committees and other club roles and activities. It is most rewarding and good for club morale.

Secretary

Our Meeting July 19th

Rotary Information

Greg Conkey gave the Rotary Information on Tuesday.  He emailed a copy of his talk to the bulletin Editor, and it is printed below:

I would like to talk about  two great organisations bound together by one great city …. The city of Chicago ..
Most .. if not all of us …  know that Rotary was started by Paul Harris in 1905 when he got together with three business acquaintances on February 23  …. 16 years later Rotary had spread to six continents including Australia ….
Today Rotary has 34,800 member clubs, 1.2m members and operates in 200 countries ..

Twelve years after Rotary was formed in Chicago another man ….. Melvin Jones …. Asked a simple question ….
“What if people put their talents to work improving communities ….”
Next year the organisation he founded will celebrate its 100th birthday ,,,,,  it’s larger than Rotary …. It has 1.4m members and serves in 210 countries ….in Australia the organisation has 26,000 members …
The organisation is Lions International …

So the two greatest service clubs in the world were started by two men with vision in Chicago …

Sergeants Session

John Gray was Tuesday's Sergeant and he started with a fine to Peter Green and then assigned him the task of carrying the box.

He advised everyone to contribute and then said that since we were a male only club, perhaps we should reflect on some interesting British history about Men's clubs.

He read from his notes about the Garrick Club founded in 1831 for actors and gentlemen of refinement.  Then he spoke of the Whites club founded in 1693 from which ex-Prime Minister David Cameron had been a member for 15 years and resigned.

He concluded with a story about the Boodles club.  In a historic vote, Boodles member’s wives were allowed to not only eat in the dining room but also sleep in the historic upstairs rooms.  Accordingly a Boodles member questioned that if wives were allowed upstairs, what about mistresses?    The board met in and emergency session and announced that…”Yes, mistresses would be allowed to sleep upstairs...with their illicit partner at the club...as long as they were married to a current member" .

David Benn is running the second  at his place on the 10th September.

Last year, the event raised $1000, and Benny would love to see that, plus this year.

Wollundry Photo News

Best Looking Table

Without a guest speaker, there was considerable time for fellowship and photography.
Wollundry Rotarians are known to be self confident and mildly competitive, and as the photographer circled around taking pictures, every table boasted to be the best looking table.  That being said, it seemed appropriate to pick a judge, have a proper contest and let the judge decide which table was in fact, the "Best Looking Table".

Next came the challenge of who would be the judge.  It had to be someone who was a long time member, totally unbiased and unafraid to express himself.  Now that included quite a few members, but  President Elect Paul Milde came forward and chose the winning table.
You might not agree with Paul, but review the tables yourself, pick a winner and click on the button below the pictures to see his choice.
