 Presidents Report

President Geoff began the meeting by the singing of Rotary Grace and a fine toast to Queen and Country.
A welcome was extended to Phil Roy our guest speaker, and to Glen Maslin who was a guest of David Hodge.
President Geoff read us a letter from Nellie Shepherd who is our exchange student into Sweden. She is learning Swedish and is using postit notes and children's books. She is having an awesome time. The letter read in part that she had met her host families, had got lost on the bus and had a really nice Rotary brother and sister. She has involved herself with the school music area and has found it easy to make friends there.  Mark Hillis pointed out that she is just 15, so her progress is even more remarkable.

As muted earlier, we have engaged a marketing person for both the regular markets and the big events. Her name is Julie O'Keefe and we have joined a three month agreement with her. This will take a huge load off the market managers!

Geoff then proceeded to the survey sent by DG Milston regarding redistricting. We were all given copy of this survey and today was the deadline to get our thoughts back to the DG.
Geoff outlined his own preferences, and we were given the opportunity to present our own thoughts on the matter.
Most felt that the better solution would be to divide the District at a line passing just above Griffith and Young. The lower half would join with the District entered on Canberra, while the upper half had a higher propensity to gravitate to Sydney. This would give an area to 9700/9710,which made sense from a distance and focus point of view.
Naturally we might all prefer to leave the boundaries as we know them, but we have to face reality.
Ed note: We are very fortunate that Noel Trevaskis the Area Director is handling this. He has laid open the situation to the current and DGs and DGEs and asked their opinion and will take it on board in the deliberations. This approach is not always the approach of RI.
The two maps show the clubs in 9700, and where the line might be drawn and the resulting Districts.

GUEST SPEAKER

Today's Guest Speaker, Phil Roy was intoduced by Craig Bromley.
Phil is a director of systems and applications at CSU. There are some 230 applications that the crew at CSU manages.

The theme of his talk was that the rate of change was increasing and that technology was rapidly becoming both necessary and accepted in the community. There is disruption ahead! There are complete changes coming in the way we use technology, and its effect on current businessses will be profound. Phil used Kodak as an example. Although Kodak owns many of the patents that make digital image capture possible, they didn't capitalise on the advances that they themselves introduced and so lost 90% of their business. The Taxi business is another classic example with the introduction of Uber, music sales have changed in character completely, as has TV with live streaming. Newsprint is under huge pressure, as is journalism itself. The AFL media unit will soon be a broadcast station in itself.
There are unintended consequences. Amazon began as on line selling service, but now uses its cloud facility to support other retailers, such as Canon, AON etc, SMS developed in the same way.
The Internet of Things connects us to things by WIFI. Examples are door locks, sprinkler systems, refrigeration, light control, security etc. It seems strange, but the average household even now has somewhere around 7 devices attached to WIFI. Weather stations are a popular use of this technology. The particularly clever ones can monitor the weather and rainfall, and adjust your water system accordingly. An estimated 40% saving on water usage.
Phil concluded by drawing our attention to backing up our computer continuously, either to a physical hard drive or to a cloud server.
Change your password often, and make sure it consists numbers symbols and letters. Use different passwords for different application. It won't guarantee that you have absolute security but it will make it harder to hack.
And finally, don't open something that is suspicious! Its if seems to good to be true, on the web it is!!
After fielding several questions that related mostly to NBN, Phil was thanked warmly by PP David Benn.

Weekly Quote:       "experience isn't what happens to us, it is what we do with what happens to us"

Happy Valentines day to all who care  for a day, but think more of those that do so every day.

I am away for a month so be helpful to Paul Milde,  President Elect in my absence.

All directors get your Board Reports in early to Paul Milde, To Club Runner and to all the other board members.

Remember the Food and Wine Festival needs you and your partner where ever and whenever possible.

Our Meeting Jan 31-2017 v2

ROTARY INFORMATION
Today charter member Ken Cook delivered this segment.
Thirty nine years to the day next Monday, South Wagga Rotary club invited a number of local businessmen to attend their weekly meeting, to discuss the possible formation of a lunch time club.
At the conclusion of that meeting, 21 prospective members showed sufficient interest and subsequently the “Wagga Wagga Mid-day Rotary club" was born.
The next meeting took place on Tuesday 28th February at which the provisional Rotary club of Wollundry - Wagga Wagga was formed with 29 members including Graham Hornibrook as chairman.

The New Members Night.
Feb 22nd, at Beer Deluxe , 6.30.
Rob Nicholson presented his list again and asked us to follow up any others whom you think might  be invited. There will be a written  invitation sent to each person.
When you think of prospective Rotarians also think outside your own club's needs.

SERGEANT'S SESSION

Peter Crozier  called on John Smith to carry the box.
There was some small confusion as Peter Clucas had arranged the swap ages before, but then asked Michael Georgiou  to fill in today.
Malcolm Roberson was fined for being late to his daughter's wedding. So was his daughter. They were in the same car that had a flat!
Peter attacked sports lovers, fining all those who watched the women's sport, as well as the SuperBowl. No one was spared
John Smith was also fined for organising two caterers at the AeroClub barbecue!
Despite the early confusion it all worked out very well:)

FOOD AND WINE ROSTERS
David Byfield has placed rosters on the meeting tables to be filled in for the Friday and Saturday. If you have not already done so please place your name for a couple of sessions if you can. We do not have to do the "pull down"
