President's Report
At our Board meeting this week we decided that our $10,000 donation for the Fiji disaster would be best placed with RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) as 100% of funds will go to the people of Fiji and there will be an opportunity for Wollundry Rotarians to help with an overseas RAWCS funded aid program if sufficient interest prevails.  This was put to the club and approved unanimously.

Our Treasurer believes that he may be in a position to refund some Club fees this year due to his diligent management of the Club account (and brutal Sergeant Sessions!) however this was held over for discussion next month due to Mr Pyke being away on another golf tour.

Peter Clucas and his social committee have proposed a date of Saturday 7th May for our next social function involving members and partners.  Peter will provide more details in due course.  The board has agreed that this function will be partially funded through the Club account.

Paul Murray will be conducting a Club Runner training program at 5pm Wed May 11th for Directors and all committee chairs to show people how to upload key information (documents, procedures, committee notes etc) to our website for future reference.

At our Club assembly three items were discussed in detail being Markets, Meeting attendance and the Club's support of the proposed Bike Trail.
Members were given time to offer opinions and provide comments on these topics that will have an impact on the club.

Members were supportive of the Board position that Sunday markets have ceased and Special Markets may operate when and where the Special Markets committee puts forward a good case such as a Christmas market, or Australia Day, Spring Fair or perhaps even a Special Car Boot Sale.  The Myer management have been informed by letter that the Markets are no longer being held on a regular basis and hopefully we will be allowed to keep our container and toilet facility there until a new direction is found.  The Club was also supportive of continuing to run the Sprout & About market on a monthly basis while we keep 'watching' the progress of other weekly Farmers Markets.

Membership attendance was discussed in detail with some members believing our Club should be 'firmer' on the Rotary International requirement of 50% attendance (or equivalent with approved Makeups).  There was a general feeling that the Board should allow some leniency subject to an individual's situation although members of Wollundry should aim to achieve 50% attendance throughout the year.

The Wagga Bike Trail was the last topic of discussion with some members' not in favour of Wollundry supporting this initiative and others fully supportive.  It was pointed out that one of our two main fundraisers, The Gears & Beers Festival was almost entirely supported by bike riders and perhaps we should 'give a little back' to this community.  Stay tuned for more on this topic!

Overall we had a busy and productive meeting.

Geoff Hamilton
Our Meeting April 19th
Today was a Club Assembly.
As you will see from Pres Geoff's section, there was much to discuss. The really great thing about this forum was  that members felt very comfortable to voice their opinions. Discussion was  open, frank and passionate !!

Chris Needs Driving Mentors
Chris Hillis addressed members regarding the need for driving mentors for a program sponsored by Youth Safe.  She is asking for 6 to volunteers and cars will be provided.  Volunteers will need to be holding a valid drivers license.
Tim Barter tells us the great news.
Tim took the podium to announce formally that the club had raised $75000 at the Food and Wine Festival.
A great effort and a recognition of the hard work by Tim and his team during the year's leadup.

Rotary Information from Ken Cook
Rotary Australian World Community Service (RAWCS) enables Rotarians, partners and friends to volunteer their time and effort in community projects both in Australia and overseas
There are a number of projects including building construction and maintenance, water storage, health and education
Work takes place in developing countries with the volunteers paying their own travel expenses
Volunteers usually spend two weeks assisting the local community
Further information on RAWCS projects can be found at:   www.rawcs.org.au

Frank Fuller was Sergeant
Frank showed no mercy, even to his own flesh and blood as Rob was pinged for being late. Paul Murray was accused of being a little late to be a gift to the world, and Paul Milde made the error of being disrespectful to a copper!.
We all then put in a dollar to listen to a clean and insightful understanding of the mentality of the Australian grey nomad. (you had to be there!!)

Michael Knight put in a good word for Wollundry.
It appears our club has the most registered for The District Conference of all the clubs in the Wagga Group, so maybe we are back in the good books! He urged us to make as much noise as we could on the day. Bring your drum,or anything that makes a racket!! Michael is also seeking help to put up the tents at the Conference on Saturday morning. If you can help please phone him as soon as possible. Could we wear our white dress shirts , please, and dont forget it is not too late to register!

A Message from Tayla in Copenhagen.
Recently I went to Tivoli which is a theme park in the middle of Copenhagen, it was really cool all of the decoration and painting are all the same. It's a little bit magical and you would never expect to find it in the middle of the city!
I went to Amalienbrog Slot (the Palace), with another Australian exchange student for Queen Margrethe's Birthday! It was so surreal the whole royal family came out on the palace balconies, we saw Princess Mary, and we held up our Australian flag and convinced our selves that she saw us too!
I also had my Galla at school which I attended with my class!
I have been in contact with Darren Wallace, who is always helpful.
Best wishes,

Tayla

By the Way.

A certificate ,

And an Invitation!
In my life. Andy Irvine.
Born in 1960, Andy had an idyllic childhood, growing up in Darwin where his dad worked as a pharmacist. He and his twin brother were great swimmers, able seamen and champion ballroom dancers. Andy learned the clarinet and formed a band along with his brother and several friends called( I think) "Anna Crucis"
He was in Darwin when Tracey went through, and his whole house was flattened except for the two rooms where the family were sheltering. He was evacuated to Melbourne for the latter years of his schooling, but came back as Bev was still there. They had been going out since 2nd year in high school.
On the day the HSC finished, he took a job in hotel hospitality and has never looked back. He came to Wagga Wagga from Dubbo,( with a few steps between Dubbo and Darwin.)
He sold the Vic hotel in 2006 and since then has enjoyed "the life". His small farm occupies a good deal of his time but he fills in with golf, and because of  his exoerience as a boy can sail with Mark Hillis at the drop of a hat. The flying club keeps him well amused as well. Andy was invited to join Rotary by Michael Knight and has never regretted his association with the club.
Our NYSF student returns.
One of the great programmes that we at Wollundry support is the NYSF .
Sachita Banddarra was our student this year and he presented a wonderful talk on his experiences at the Forum
There were students from all around Australia and some from as far as South Africa.
Rotarians took the role of caregivers as for some if not most this was the longest separation from family and that can be a bit tough.
There were representatives  from universities around Australia and from science oriented corporations.
Of particular interest to him was the video conference from CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire") or The European Council for Nuclear Research.
There they run a huge Haldron Collider.

At 27-kilometres, LHC is the world's largest particle accelerator. It collides protons or lead ions at energies approaching the speed of light. This technology has let them find Higgs Boson and many other sub nuclear particles.

There were also workshops on critical thinking and options after the HSC.

They were introduced to luminaries such as Australian  Nobel Prize winning Professor Schmidt who was awarded for his work in discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae, a prize he shared with shared with Saul Perlmutter and Adam G. Riess.

This experience has helped confirm his goal of studying Engineering, in the biomedical or civil field.

He thanked the Club for the opportunity to attend this life changing and affirming experience. He was very excited to tell us that he had been asked to be a student mentor for the next session.

President Geoff in thanking him for his presentation, confirmed that the club had put aside funds for two such scholarships next year.

District Conference in Wagga

Michael Knight spoke glowingly of the speakers scheduled for the upcoming District Conference.  He urged all members to "get online, register and become involved".

Michael is the Conference Chairman and has dedicated a significant amount of time and effort into the conference planning.

Rotary Wheel Meal Deal
The Rotary Wheel Meal Deal is running really well. This is and ideal way to get to know your fellow Club Members in a relaxed and very informal way. If you aren't already taking part, contact Paul Murray and he will set the wheel in motion.
Here Doug and Kaye Sutton entertained Geoff and Ros Breust, along with Peter and Gail Crosier and David and Cass Hodge.
