When Brad Rubini was reading a bedtime story to his seven-year-old daughter, Claire, she asked him why he was reading the words wrong.
“I’m dyslexic, so I thought I was reading the words right,” recalls Rubini, a past president of the Rotary Club of Toledo, Ohio.
After he explained his problem, she began to read to him on most nights instead. “She was a voracious reader and storyteller. She was always telling stories, even when she was a toddler,” he says.
Three years later, while Claire was away at summer camp, she died unexpectedly as a result of a...

In the seven days from 7 through 13 March, I took precisely 84,250 steps. This amounted to 39.85 miles. I also climbed 288 floors and burned 22,055 calories.
I’m fairly certain that you, gentle readers, could not care less about those statistics. Unless, of course, you’re one of the millions of gentle readers who have joined America’s fitness self-surveillance movement by strapping a tracking device to your wrist. In which case, you are probably pretty darned impressed by my stats.
I should therefore add a few crucial caveats.
Caveat No. 1: That week...

Just before John Germ dropped by, Rick Youngblood took a deep breath. “You want to match his energy,” he says, “but he makes it hard to keep up.” Youngblood is the president and CEO of Blood Assurance, a regional blood bank in Chattanooga, Tenn., that Germ helped found in 1972. After his visit with Youngblood, Germ strode between mountains of empty bottles and cans at Chattanooga’s John F. Germ Recycling Center at Orange Grove, which he designed, before he drove to a construction site and popped a cork to dedicate a Miracle League field where special...

The way Cynthia Salim sees it, the fashion industry doesn't have much to offer a young, socially conscious woman like her when it comes to work clothes.
"The fashion industry often does 'sexy' or 'fun' or 'hip,' and things that encourage frequent purchases," the 29-year-old says. "It's very rare that the design community will design something that will make a young woman look credible and influential as well as timeless."
Add "and is ethically made" to that list, and it becomes a tall order that Salim became increasingly frustrated trying to fill when...

Susan Davis has devoted the past three decades to using social entrepreneurship and microfinance to address extreme poverty, particularly in Bangladesh. A Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship in the early 1980s allowed her to study international relations at the University of Oxford. A decade ago, she co-founded BRAC USA (previously the Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee) to help the world’s poor through self-empowerment. She is co-author, with journalist David Bornstein, of the book Social Entrepreneurship: What Everyone Needs to...
The 2016 Changeover evening was a great celebration of the fabulous achievements of Wollundry Rotary Club. Darren Wallace did an outstanding job as emcee for the evening. It was highly entertaining as we found out the inner secrets of members as well as finding out what their fantasy "Victoria's Secrets" are.
As we all know Darren has a wonderful singing voice and he provided one of the highlights of the evening as he crooned his way through a special tribute to Past President, Geoff Hamilton and sang "I Did It My Way"!!!!!
President for 2015-16, Geoff Hamilton welcomed everyone including the Mayor Rod Kendall and his wife Robyn and District Governor Gary Roberts and his wife Marilyn. He made special reference to the hard work and achievements of his Board and the members.
As we are aware Geoff and Jan are moving to live on their beautiful farm in Tasmania shortly. We will miss them both, but Geoff will return regularly as our first "fly in fly out" member.
The entertainment for the evening was not only provide by Darren Wallace, but also by our "Bush Bard" David Benn.
David provided us with a double dose of his bush poetry with his unique renditions of the "Cattle Dog's Revenge and the Cattle Dog's Return".
DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S AWARDS
District Governor, Gary Roberts paid tribute to the many achievements of Wollundry during the past year. He made special mention of the work at district level of Paul Murray and John Egan. He also thanked Michael Knight for his tremendous effort in coordinating the organisation of this year's very successful District Conference held in Wagga Wagga.
DG Gary made special mention of Doug Sutton and his chairing of the District 9700 Global Grant Committee for the program in the Democratic Republic of The Congo.
Pictured with the District Governor are:
District 9700 Rotarian of the Year, Paul Murray
District 9700 Youth Award RYPEN, Darren Wallace
District 9700 Community Service Award for the domestic violence program at the Wagga Wagga Women's Health Centre.
Conference Attendance Award ($100 for the bar). This was for the club which made the loudest noise at the conference-no other club had a chance with Geoff playing the Bagpipes!!!!
Club members still haven't seen the $100 on the bar Geoff!
District Governor Gary made a special International Rotary Award to Maria Egan.
The award is the Rotary International Partner Award for Exemplar Service to Humanity.
Thoroughly deserved and well done Maria!
CLUB AWARDS
CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR
A thoroughly deserved presentation to the Wollundry Club Member of the Year, James Hamilton.
James does a magnificent job for the club, writing policies, chasing the red tape makers, ensuring the club's finances are always balanced and in the black. It is one club position he will never be challenged for!
PAUL HARRIS FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENTS
The two newest recipients of Paul Harris Fellowships, Phil McIntosh, President 2013-14 and John Ferguson, President 2014-15 are pictured with their family and friends after the presentations.
One is an avid cycling enthusiast, the other a passionate railway supporter. No wonder Wollundry has been on the "right Road and Track" to success for years!
THE ONE HUNDRED PERCENTAGERS!
Pictured are the members who have achieved 100% attendance for the year.
Headed by David Byfield at a massive 3600%!
Kat was granted honorary membership of this illustrious group for the night and it is obvious that James and Neil were very pleased she was!
THE BULLETIN EDITORS
Great job again, headed by Editor in Chief, Paul Murray.
2016-17 PRESIDENT AND BOARD
Past President Geoff Hamilton hands over to our 2016-17 President Geoff Bruest.
Congratulations Geoff!
The 2016-17 Board of Directors of Wollundry Rotary Club.
