Geoff made the following announcements:
  • Brent Pickard has sent an email to Peter Crozier describing the temperature and climate in Canada. - 25c to -35c. He wanted to know when is the Rugby Choir coming to Canada?
  • The Beach Boys postponed concert last night was a success after the previous night's washout. We were unable to put on a barbecue as there were only three volunteers at short notice. Thanks to those that did volunteer.
  • Rotary Adventure in Citizenship is an initiative that will take young people to Parliament House to see Democracy at work. Contact Geoff if you have someone in mind who might wish to attend and you want further information.
  • Rotary Peace Ceremony is on next Sunday at the Victory Memorial Gardens commencing with a barbecue breakfast at 8 am. The Ceremony itself will commence at 9 am.

Guest Speaker
Today's guest speaker Lyn Quigley was introduced by President Geoff who invited her to the microphone to tell us about
Wagga Abbeyfield House.
Lyn reminded us that she had spoken at our Club some three years ago. At that time her committee had hoped to build a traditional Abbeyfield House for persons with some intellectual challenges who needed care and guidance. The project had been costed at 3.6 million but it became apparent that it was not possible to progress the project in that way.

Last year following a good deal of research the committee came up  with a new plan in line with changing trends. A new and exciting concept was developed which will provide more autonomy for the residents yet provide them with security and assistance with daily living skills, budgeting, hygiene etc.,

The proposal is to build six self contained units on a block purchased by the committee on the corner of Paul and Stanley streets. They will have shared indoor and outdoor recreation areas. One unit will be reserved for a live-in support person. The overall management will be done by the Abbeyfield Kooringal Committee.

In providing background to the project, Lyn pointed out the great need for such a facility. She told us that mildly intellectually disabled adults end up in age care accommodation because there is no alternative accommodation for them. The 2011 ABS show that in Wagga there are 1,611 who fall into this category. Currently there are no resources in Wagga for this group of people. They are being cared for by mostly ageing parents and relatives. The average age of carers is 77 and the eldest carer is 86. Interlink is supporting 80 such families and other providers another 50+.

The benefits of the facility will be:
  • Residents will have choice and control over their lives.
  • Living skills will be developed and socialising will be encouraged.
  • Residents will have security and the facility will be compatible with NDIS legislation.
  • Double garages in units will provide space for recreation e.g pool room, games room etc.
  • It will be built to residential standard so will not require special development approval.
  • It will have asset flexibility i.e. the units will be saleable if no longer required for the proposed purpose.
  • Cheaper to build and will blend in with other housing in the area.
  • Self sustainable.
The live-in coordinator will provide skill development and security. This person will be the main contact for residents with public organisations etc and will help organise social contacts.

How can Rotary Help.

Firstly by providing community awareness. Talk about the project with others in the community so that they can understand the need and possibly provide some support.

Secondly by providing financial support.

The facility will cost 1.85 million. The committee have 1.4 million so are $450,000 short. Additionally there are the following costs:
  • Furniture and fittings $50,000
  • Carpark                          $50,000
  • Window fittings            $40,000
Lyn concluded by thanking Wollundry Rotary for the opportunity to address members and for the good work that we do in the community. She hoped that the Abbeyfield House project would be favourably considered by the Food and Wine Committee to whom they have made a submission.

John Egan gave a vote of thanks on behalf of members who showed their appreciation with applause.

Our Meeting
ROTARY EXCHANGE STUDENT
President Geoff invited Willis Cheng to tell us about his activities over the past week. Willis is a very friendly character whose English is slowly improving but much of his communication comes through his pleasing personality and appropriate gestures. He told us that he had a two hour discussion with Michael Knight about Rotary. School is going well. Michael Knight has a new pet snake in his airconditioning duct. He has made good friends at school and when questioned whether or not he had a girlfriend he said this was "too much information".

ROTARY INFORMATION
Our Mayor and PP Greg Conkey was today's Rotary informant. He talked about various Youth programs that Rotary conduct.
RYLA is a week long leadership camp for 18 to 25 year olds. There are 6 ex attendees who are now members of our club. It provides an opportunity for young people to develop their social and leadership skills in a friendly setting with a number of speakers and workshops. It is held at a district level. RYPEN is a camp for a younger age group and our club has been heavily involved in running these at Borambola over a number of years. School age children from mid teens come to the camp for social interaction and learning. Rotary members provide support and organise lectures and activities.

SERGEANT'S SESSION

Michael Georgiou was today's Sergeant.
There was some trepidation among members which was heightened when Michael told us that he was going to tell a couple of jokes.
We were all relieved and enjoyed his humour which this occasion was perfectly acceptable.
He fined John Egan for the arrival of his new grandson.

MEMBER PROFILE

Today's member profile was delivered by Daniel Burns one of our newer and younger members. Daniel started his story in an unusual way by telling us that he tends to reveal a lot about himself which  makes him feel quite vulnerable and therefore he asked us to be kind to him. He then told us of a childhood in New Zealand. He has an older brother and sister who still live there. His mother also lives in NZ.  Daniel was close to his father but was devastated when he died at the age of 41. He talked of sibling rivalry and an episode of bullying at school which has had a long term effect.

Daniel was a very good soccer player representing his age group at a national level. He then went on to play Rugby representing Auckland at the age of 19 and playing five eight. He recounted a final game when his side were down and he kicked a field goal to level the score and then kicked  a penalty goal in extra time to give his side a winning margin. This was special to him because it brought admiration from his brother and was a point of reconciliation between them.

Unfortunately due to time constraints we  didn't hear the remainder of Daniel's story which had to be postponed to another day. Members were kind and warmly applauded Daniel for his sharing of some personal and obviously emotional stories.

NEW MEMBERS NIGHT
Rob Nicholson reminded us that this function is a men only night and is to commence at 6 p.m. on Wed 22nd at beer deluxe. There will be free beer and nibbles for guests. Rob wants to restrict the numbers to those who have nominated prospective members and some of the committee members so as not to overwhelm our guests.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE ORANGE
James Ross encouraged us to consider coming to the District Conference on the weekend commencing 17th March. He reminded us of the good times people experienced at previous conferences and assured us that the speakers engaged will be very interesting.
