The Wollundry Board met last night and the meeting was well attended with good reports from Directors. We had the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the new Rotaract Club of Wagga Wagga CSU join us to see how our meeting was conducted. This new club of young students is gaining significant momentum with some 11 members already and growing. They are keen and eager to learn and moving towards charter now that CSU has approved their operation. They have offered to assist with Wollundry's BBQ at Sprout and About, will attend our meeting on 30 August to give an update on their activities and have issued a challenge for a Bowling Night on Friday 23 September.
This year, in November, is the centenary of Rotary Foundation – a substantial milestone. Foundation has provided resources and has undertaken numerous outstanding activities world wide in assisting those less fortunate. Of course, the most significant initiative has been the End Polio program with the Gates Foundation. We have almost eradicated polio from the world - just a few hot spots to go. Perhaps Wollundry Rotarians could consider becoming Centurions – perhaps your $50 refund on last year's subs could be used for this purpose.
The Board discussed great suggestions for Vocational Visits for this year. These are being worked up by Rob Fuller and his committee.
Rob Nicholson discussed some great ideas on how we can strengthen our membership and will be bringing these ideas to members shortly - including a survey of likes.
Some significant good governance work is still to be done in Administration especially round risk assessments and policies / procedures for our main festivals although much work has been done thanks to Tim Barter and Phil McIntosh on our two main events.
Board approved an extension to the LOA for Craig Bromley until the end of October 2016 and agreed to the club covering the hire cost of a saxophone for our Exchange Student, Willis Cheng.
Paul Milde stood in for Secretary Gerry Gerlach. He read Gerry's Quote for the week:
“draw a picture of a new you in your mind, believe it, follow it and you will succeed”
He then read the members club rosters and Birthdays and Anniversaries, all of which are printed in the left columns of our bulletin.
Graham Burmeister came to the podium and gave a bit of history of the origins of Wollundry CSU Science Scholarship. He noted that the scholarship came about under the presidency of John Ashton in 1991 and with Vocational Director Frank Fuller doing the investigation with Graham. At that time it was by far the largest scholarship at CSU. Graham noted John Ireland has been on the selection committee for the last 25 years. More information can be obtained by clicking on our Wollundry CSU Science Scholarship History Web Page.
Sergeant
Sergeant Frank Fuller mentioned last Friday's national news and Dr Maddy Calino (our Recipient of Gordon Braid Scholarship) is still doing research at Westmead Hospital and has received a follow on 5 million dollar grant.
Fines: Frank mentioned some familiar faces that have returned: Burmo, John Gray, David Pyke, and John Smith. Tim McMullen was fined as our newest member. The following people were fined: Rob Pearson, Peter Crozier, Daniel Burns, Paul Milde. Rick Priest, John Mason.
Frank proceeded to do Heads and Tails, based on Olmpic Questions. Everyone was eliminated except Nelly and Wal Paton. Nelly was obviously the crowd favourite, however, Wal showed the wisdom of age and took home the bottle of wine.
After the Sergeant session, President Geoff said the competition went on so long that Nelly would be able old enough to drink the wine by the time it was over.
Sprout and About Market Report Sat Aug 13th
Team: Paul Milde OIC. Jim Gibson, Nick Leywood, David Foster, John Mason, Bob Willis, Rick Priest, Doug Sutton, James Ross, Frank Fuller, David Benn, James Hamilton & Paul Murray.
Cold morning with a small problem when the OIC didn’t space the number cards correctly resulting in a large adjustment to the tents. The team handled the situation well.
By 9.30 am it started to warm up and the crowd started to arrive looking for a bargain. We had 21 sites occupied with three no shows and one casual stall holder turning up for a site.
OIC spent some time with the stall holders on his round and will sit down with Ken Taylor to discuss their comments. Stall holders were all happy with the market as they made money and they appreciated the collection happening about 10.45 am.
As it was a warm day people were looking for bottled water. It was suggested we place two slabs of bottle water in the BBQ trailer esky and sell on the day. No need to place water on ice as customers like it at room temperature.
The set up and pack up were completed in very good times by a great team. Thank you to the members who pick up and returned the trailers. Thank you to the members who manned the BBQ where the world’s problems were solved with good fellowship and coffee.
Funds collected on day were:
Stalls - $900.00
BBQ - $174.70
Donations - $119.05
Total Banked – $1,193.75
Fellowship was held at the old tree of knowledge site where the esky was emptied and the nibbles were consumed. Next time the OIC will put in a bottle of red.
A great day for Wollundry Rotary and the Wagga Community.
The bank account is close to $29,000 and there is a $20,000 cheque to come from WWCC. Press release will come out today. Traffic Management committee has approved the route. Web-page is up and running. Members need to sign up as Marshalls are needed.
Membership Director Rob Nicholson asked members for a show of hands of how many members have invited people to Rotary in the last month, three months or the last six months. Rob also noted the questionaire that was on the table that he would like filled out as to why you joined Rotary. If you haven't all ready filled it out...Click here to download a copy of the questionaire.
Wagga Aero Club Open Day
John Smith came to the podium and reminded members of the upcoming Wagga Aero Club open day on Saturday, 16th of September.
David Benn reminded members of the RUOK day on the 10th of September, which coincides with Spout and About Market, a fly in in the afternoon and Bon-Fire in the evening at Benns. David also updated members on the IFCR. There are six teams involved and if you are interested in playing, you don't have to be experienced.
Malcolm Roberts Gives His Member Profile
Malcom Roberts was born in Hay in 1947. His family farm was in Ivanhoe. His education included Hay for a year and a half and then Boarding School in Sydney. He became a Jackaroo for a few years and that was like "Uni, but alot more fun"!
In 1967 his family purchased a property in a remote spot in the hills near Big Springs (also near Paul Murray and Tim Macgillycuddy's properties) and lived there for four years. The property had no mail service or phone or electricity, so his office was at Romanos. He picked up parcels and letters from home at the hotel. See Photos below. It was here that he also learned about the drought.
The Big Springs property was 2600 acres of rocks, rabbits and roos. In what Malcolm described as a swap, he moved back to Ivanhoe to a 35,000 acre property next to his parents.
He married Fran from Lockhart in 1972 and they have four children. He spent the next 30 years in agriculture at Ivanhoe. He retired back in Wagga and felt like it "was coming home."
It has been great joining Wollundry. He noted that he was out to the Sale Yard yesterday and a friend from Ivanhoe sold 33 head of cattle made $55,000 so he is thinking about getting back into farming!
