Presidents Report September 13th 2016

President Geoff  welcomed our visitors, Carolyn Murray who was there with her husband Paul, Nellie Shephard who is our soon to be exchange student in Sweden, and Bob Aitken who was the guest speaker.

He then invited our current exchange student Willis to fill us in on his week , and we heard that he had spent some time with Burmo and a little with the aero club. The Aero Club open day unfortunately was affected by the rain as were most events timed for this weekend.

Geoff also called for volunteers who might be able to help out at the Aussie Rules Grand Finals. We would be supporting the Apex Club which is always on hand for us, in a big way. If you can, could you contact Geoff asap please.

Our Meeting

Rotary Information

FOUNDATION FACTS  NUMBER 8

“Did you know that a group of Rotarians can combine their points to make Recognition? The minimum transfer is 100 points  and in denominations of 100 points.”

Greg Conkey told us of the tours that are available in Evanston, which include a visit to a replica of Rm 711, where the first ever Rotary meeting was held. The tour includes a visit to all the vital offices in he Rotary building and you are able to meet some of the people behind the scenes. (Pikey has booked his visit already, mumbling something about seeing a man about a dog or something like that.)

Their are many Rotary acronyms. We are involved with RYLA, RYPEN, RYDA, NSF, ARH,and the list goes on even further.

RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly. Here 18 to 25 yr old young people who have shown potential in their school or work environments are invited to attend a "boot camp" where they learn many interpersonal skills and leadership skills which equip them for their future as community, and business leaders.

The event is run over a week, and students from all around our District attend. They hear talks from inspiring successful business people, from great leaders in all works of life, and are given some personal physical challenges by members of the armed forces. Currently this programme is hosted by Orange Daybreak, who will be calling for nominations very soon . It usually runs around Eastertide and costs about $700. Most clubs pay this in full for their invitee.

Sergeant

Sergeant Laurie told a really great story about a cab and a hearse after he had made some unfortunate members pay heavily for minor fumbling  infringements, for being unavoidably delayed or simply backing the wrong footy team. Even an eventual win in the Union didn't help, and woe betide anyone caught up with wild beasts!!!

But it is good that he is finally getting the "This Close" message!!

Gala Evening Beyond Bank

Jim Gibson announced that Beyond Bank is holding its Gala Presentation night this Thursday the 19th. This event showcases the involvement of Beyond Bank in the community as they distribute funds to worthy causes. Wollundry is in the running for some of this and if you would like to attend, please contact Jim.

Paul Harris Fellows

Each year our club awards one or more Paul Harris Fellows to people either in our club or to community members, who are worthy of recognition.
If you know of someone who you think is outstanding, please let Pres Geoff know and he will pass this on to the nominating committee.
Paul Harris Fellows are very prestigious in the Rotary world of Australia. They are given by RI in recognition of $1000 donation to the Foundation.

Guest Speaker

Guest Speaker  was Bob Aitken, the roving ambassador for Australian Rotary Health

In an enthusiastic talk he outlined the amazing work that ARH has done since its inception some 30 years ago by Ian Scott, who decided that we needed to have more access to medical research funds. He was particularly touched by the high incidence of Cot Death and proceeded to raise funds. Australian Rotary Health was born.

In that thirty years we have raised and spent more than 33 million dollars, all of which has gone into Australian medical research .

The current area of focus is Mental Health, and Bob mentioned two frightening statistics, the first being that one person in five will suffer some mental problem in their lives; the second that suicide outnumbers road fatalities. We need to find out the factors so that we can reduce the incidence of self harm. Another amazing statistic is that 17000 people were badly enough affected by mental torture that they attempted suicide!!

Bob urged us to keep up our support, and suggested that some may like to become private donors. The work is important, very important.
