Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events. From the July 2016 issue of The Rotarian Just before John Germ dropped by, Rick Youngblood took a deep breath. “You want to match his energy,” he says, “but he makes it hard to keep up.” Youngblood is the president and CEO of Blood Assurance, a regional blood bank in Chattanooga, Tenn., that Germ helped found in 1972. After his visit with Youngblood, Germ strode between mountains of empty bottles and cans at Chattanooga’s John F. Germ Recycling Center at Orange Grove, which he designed, before he drove to a construction site and popped a cork to dedicate a Miracle League field where special...

From the July 2016 issue of The Rotarian When Brad Rubini was reading a bedtime story to his seven-year-old daughter, Claire, she asked him why he was reading the words wrong. “I’m dyslexic, so I thought I was reading the words right,” recalls Rubini, a past president of the Rotary Club of Toledo, Ohio. After he explained his problem, she began to read to him on most nights instead. “She was a voracious reader and storyteller. She was always telling stories, even when she was a toddler,” he says. Three years later, while Claire was away at summer camp, she died unexpectedly as a result of a...

From the July 2016 issue of The Rotarian In the seven days from 7 through 13 March, I took precisely 84,250 steps. This amounted to 39.85 miles. I also climbed 288 floors and burned 22,055 calories. I’m fairly certain that you, gentle readers, could not care less about those statistics. Unless, of course, you’re one of the millions of gentle readers who have joined America’s fitness self-surveillance movement by strapping a tracking device to your wrist. In which case, you are probably pretty darned impressed by my stats. I should therefore add a few crucial caveats. Caveat No. 1: That week...

PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS  12 JULY 2016

Great farewell to Kat last Friday night at the Thirsty Crow – some 30 all together attended. Kat was quite teary again.

Yesterday about 20 of her school mates farewelled her at the airport – with the Fullers, Wallaces, Robertsons, Dave Foster and yours truly.

Kat had a great impact on Rob and Suzanne Fuller’s six year old son, Jack. He did not want her to go home to Sweden.

Pic attached

Sprout and About was cancelled due weather and state of the ground at the lagoon.

We are seeking guest speakers – an email was sent to all seeking assistance in nominating speakers.

Our first Board Meeting for the year is on next Monday evening here at the Commercial Club at 5.30pm.
All directors are requested to submit their reports to Gerry and myself by email this week to enable reporting and discussion.
I will send out agenda today and a copy of the minutes of the last meeting. Jim Gibson is to fill in for David Pyke, please.

Subject to the weather, I plan to be away next Monday and Tuesday – not a good sign for my second week in office,
but I have a very important task to do – pick up the new plane with my son James.
Neither of us have flown this type before so we will need to do some training and familiarisation before flying it home to Wagga.
Geoff Hamilton has very kindly agreed to step in and conduct the Board meeting and meeting next Tuesday.

Next week our guest speaker is Tom Black from Tumut who is the regional co-ordinator for Austyouth. He will be speaking to us about youth homelessness.

Our Meeting
OUR MEETING #2 for the 16 - 17 year.

President Geoff commenced the meeting with the traditional Rotary Grace, Toast to the Queen and welcomed members.

Today was a Mark Hillis Fellowship Day.

Mark read a letter out from our Exchange Student, Tayla in Denmark.

Hello Geoff,

I hope everything is well in Wagga Wagga!

Sad to see that Kat is going home, I can imagine that she will be dearly missed.

I recently got back from my Euro Tour, the first stop was Berlin, Germany, where saw many of the city's attractions like, the Berlin wall, the East Side Gallery, Check Point Charlie, The Olympic Stadium and the Jewish memorial, just to name a few. Berlin was a really lively it felt like there was always something going on!

Next stop was Prague, Czech Republic. On the way to Prague we had two stops the first was at Dresden, Germany, it was a very beautiful and had amazing sandwiches! The second stop was in the Czech Republic, at Terezin, a holding Camp which was occupied by Nazi Germany in WW2. Its was a little bit confronting but I found it really interesting and very informative.

Then we arrived in Prague, we went to a Black Light Theater, which was interesting! Prague, is a very beautiful city, which reminded me of Fairy Tales. It also had amazing food!

Then Vienna, Austria, we attended a concert, by the Royal Austrian Orchestra, at the Schonbrunn Palace. We also visited hundertwasser, which is a beautiful house all made on different levels, different and colours. We also went to Prater, which is the oldies amusement park in the world!

After we went Ledo Di Jeslo, Italy, the first day we got a day off to relax, which was much needed! We just spent time at the beach, eating pizza and gelato!

The next day we went to Venice, it was so beautiful, one of my favorite spots on the whole trip, I went on a gondola ride and ate pasta and more gelato!

Then we stopped in Monty Carlo, Monaco, for lunch on our way to Avignon. Monaco was very pretty with amazing blue waters filled with huge, expensive yachts and there was also some of the remainder of the Monaco Grand Prix, from a couple of days before.

Next stop was Avignon, France, we had rest day were we want to the Pont Du Gard and spent the day swimming and exploring the area around! With a delightful picnic! the next day we had a very long drive to Paris!

When we arrived in Paris, France, the first day we spent the day exploring the city, we went to the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre (which we could not go into because it was closed due to the flooding), Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc De Triomphe and also the Pantheon. That night we also got to go up the Eiffel tower at night which was super pretty, especially the light show! Unfortunately also because of the flooding we weren't able to do a canal tour.

But the next day we got to go to Disney Land! Which was so much fun and I loved spending the day with my friends, going on rides and watching the light show at the end of the night!

The next place we passed through was Brussels, Belgium, where we had delicious Belgium waffles and just explored the city, going into chocolate shops the try all the different chocolates the city had to offer.

Our final stop was Amsterdam, Netherlands. We went on a canal tour and spent our last day on euro tour exploring the city and having a hygge time together.

And in one week I am going on summer holidays with my host family and they are taking me to Spain!! (I'm a very lucky girl!!!)

Best Wishes,

Tayla :)

Here is Tayla with President Geoff Hamilton, just before she left Australia.

  • # of female members in the club, Correct
  • 2nd highest %age of members with under 20 years membership -

Joke.

A man walking down 5th Avenue asks a Jew where Minskey's bagel shop is.  The Jew hands over all his parcels to the man, spreads his hands wide apart and says, "how should I know?"
(reference to Topol, in Fiddler on the Roof, perhaps)
