New Mayor of Wagga Wagga

Greg Conkey OAM, PHF Past President and Current Member of Wollundry Rotary Club was elected Mayor Of Wagga Wagga on Monday.

On his arrival at our regular Tuesday lunchtime meeting Greg was met with enthusiastic applause from all present.

We are proud of our popular Rotarian and we are all sure that he will do a great job in this most responsible role. Our congratulations go to Greg and his wife Jenny who will also assume a number of responsibilities as Lady Mayoress.

Greg addressed members and assured us that there were no deals done. His only condition on standing for the top job was that Dallas Tout would be his deputy and this was agreed to by his supporters. He praised outgoing Mayor Rod Kendall for the gracious manner he had accepted Greg's promotion and thanked Rod for the support he had offered. He said he was pleased that former mayor Kerry Pascoe, also a club member, was also on council and had offered advice and assistance.

Greg said he would stay an active member of Wollundry as he needed the members to keep his feet on the ground. He thanked everyone for their support.

Naturally Greg did not escape a substantial fine from our Sergeant John Gray.
Presidents Report

President Geoff opened our meeting with Rotary Grace and then welcomed our new Mayor Greg Conkey and former member Alan Eldridge CEO of Wagga Wagga City Council.

Geoff advised that there would be no guest speaker today as Phil McIntosh and Tim Barter  would take us through all the tasks required for the Gears and Beers Festival this coming weekend.

Geoff made the following announcements:

  • Accounting for our various enterprises including Gears and Beers is to be updated to "Zero". Thanks to Davids Pyke and Hodge for this undertaking.
  • The Bowling night with Rotaract was a success and a big thank you to all who participated.
  • Thank you to the Egans for the FACEBOOK training. A number of members have a lot of new friends.
  • The football gate collectors last weekend did a great job and helped to raise over $600 for the Club.

Rotary Information

James Hamilton presented today's Rotary Information on MUNA

The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is a significant international Rotary youth program in which our District participates.

Senior high school students develop an awareness of the United Nations and the countries they represent at a simulated UN Assembly.  The event provides an excellent forum for students to develop and practice their public speaking skills whilst debating on topical world issues.

MUNA has been held in many Rotary Districts around Australia since 1980.  The team that places first in MUNA in our district is invited to compete at the Australian National MUNA at the Old Parliament House in Canberra.   The first National MUNA took place in August 1997.

The United Nations continues to give enthusiastic support for the ongoing growth of this worthwhile project for youth.
Foundation Facts

FOUNDATION FACTS NUMBER 10

“Did you know that less than 25% of Rotarians in Australia make regular personal contributions to THE ROTARY FOUNDATION.”

BECOME A FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTOR.
Note; It is my understanding that our club has a higher percentage of regular contributors but in this year which is the centenary of Rotary Foundation, I would urge all of our members who don’t already contribute, to become regular contributors.

Gears and Beers
This weekend is our Gears and Beers festival and much organization has gone into the preparation for this major fundraiser for our Club.
Event organisers Phil McIntosh and Tim Barter gave members a final briefing on all aspects of our involvement.

Phil began by thanking the committee especially Tim Barter, Frank Fuller and Helen Fuller, Jim Gibson and David Pyke and Peter Mckinnon for their various individual responsibilities.  Deb Van Der Rijt has done an enormous job with advertising through social media which is largely responsible for the large number of registrations for the event.

The reach of the event has been extraordinary with riders coming from all over Australia and New Zealand. The dirty one thirty is booked out with the maximum of 250 riders registered.

Wagga Wagga City Council has given huge support to the festival. Phil said that the atmosphere around the event is what brings people back and the friendly marshalling efforts of our Club members is one of the major things that visitors remember!

Please refer to all the emails and rosters that have been sent to every Club member and refer to your booklet for maps, emergency phone numbers and any other information that you require.

Phil's final words were: Keep Safe and don't forget Daylight Saving starts Sunday!!

Tim Barter then gave us a run through of what is expected for the Beer Festival in the Victory Memorial Gardens.

Club members need to do the following:
  • Wear old shirts for set up but then wear your White Rotary Shirt so that you can be identified as a volunteer.
  • Check the Roster to see if you are on set up, take down etc.
  • Incident Controller is John Ferguson, put his number in your phone.
  • Check map in back of booklet to see layout of site and location of first aid, toilets, etc.
  • Riders will have red wrist bands for entry to festival. Under 18's will be required to remove red wrist band and replace with under age band to comply with non service of alcohol.
  • Bring a hat and gloves.
  • Keep off the grass as much as possible.
