Launch of Defib For Life
LAUNCH of DEFIB FOR LIFE.

Last Tuesday morning at a cold and damp Rawlings Park Defib For Life was launched. A hardy band of Wollundrians, representatives of Football Wagga Wagga and a packed media scrum supported Travis Downie as his eighteen months of hard work and dreams came to fruition.
Sue Buckman and Melissa Dunbar from Defib For Life and representatives from media consultants, Jam Media also supported the launch.

Congratulations Travis from a grateful club!

The Defib For Life Program will have an immediate impact on the Wagga and district community with its ability to save the life on any citizen who may unfortunately have a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Travis making the presentation of the Defib to Erwin Budd, President of Football Wagga Wagga.
Representatives of all Wagga Football clubs were present at the launch.
There was a full media presents at the launch. Jam Media provided an excellent program of media support.
Strong supporter of Wollundry, Phil Hoey (PHF) added his support to the media launch.
Strong support from members at the launch. Some even braved the cold conditions and "bared" the white shirts!!!

Guest Speaker Sue Buckman
GUEST SPEAKER: Sue Buckman
Today's guest speaker, Sue Buckman from Defib For Life was introduced by Travers Downie.

Sue commenced by stating that she is excited with the partnership with Wollundry. She sees the ideal of both organisations, "Service For Life" as complementary and in alignment.
Defib For Life commenced only 6 years ago with the goals of raising the awareness and educating the community to assist people who have a cardiac arrest. The organisation strives to overcome some of the negative attitudes and fear of public liability that exists in some quarters of the community. Sue confirmed that the first responder is covered by the Good Samaritans Act for their
actions. She added  that nothing will restart the heart other than defibrillator shock – it is the only definitive treatment of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Sue gave an intensely personal and highly motivational account of her involvement with Defib For Life. It began in 2010 when a young AFL player on completing a training session suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Although medical assistance was given the young player died. This young person was Sue's 19 year old son, Stephen! Sue and her family had no idea that Stephen had a heart condition. On the advice of the family doctor both Sue's other children were tested. Her younger son was fine but her daughter was found to have a heart condition. Her daughter was given a small defib implant. Since the implant was made the device has twice saved Sue's daughter's life!

Sue presented the following essential facts
  • 1 in 500 people are walking around with a heart condition that is unknown to them
  • Over 30,000 out of hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrests (SCA) occur in the community each year
  • 85% of those who have a SCA outside of hospital do not survive
  • Less than 6% of those that have a SCA outside of hospital make it past one year after their incident
  • Defib For Life has placed over 3500 AED units in to communities throughout Australia since its inception in 2010
  • Defib For Life knows of 9 lives that have been saved directly from one of their units
  • After a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, as every minute goes by there is less than 10% chance of the patient surviving
Australian Cricket Coach, Darren Lehmann and AFL great, Chris Judd are both ambassadors for the program.

A vote of thanks was given to Sue by Peter Crozier.

President's Report
President’s Report

Today we launched the AED "Defib for Life, Wagga" project.  Thankyou to those members who turned up in bleak conditions for this event.  Travis Downie and his committee have worked closely with Jam Media to get this project up and away.  Have a look at our Website for more details.  As everyone knows we have approved $23,000 for this project, primarily to help clubs and community organisations purchase and AED.  Congratulations to Travis and his team on a great job.

Our Changeover dinner is looming and Treasurer David Pyke would like members to pay by EFT as he won't collect money on the night.  The Club is subsidising the dinner reducing the cost to just $30 per person.  Please encourage your partner to come along as it is a great social night.

We will have a Club Assembly on June 21st to pass next year's budget.  The budget committee consisting of David, James Hamilton, PE Geoff Breust and myself have discussed this in detail and I need to warn members that the Club fund raising for the Community account is under significant pressure due to the drop off of income from our traditional markets.  We will have made donations of more than $140,000 by the end of this month however David is concerned we may not be able to sustain this next year.   Our Club fees will most likely be kept at the same level as this year, despite the fact that we will enjoy a $50 refund this year.  Come along on the 21st for your say!
