FOUNDATION FACTS NUMBER 7
“Did you know that Foundation recognition points do not expire, unless you pass away or your surviving partner is a Major Donor? “
Ken Cook followed on his “Where are they Now” series with Gemma Friedleib. His report:
“Gemma was asked to let us know what she has been doing since returning from her exchange and the following is her response:
My life since exchange
It is hard to believe that it is nearly 25 years since I went to Kungsbacka, Sweden on exchange in 1992.
Since returning at the beginning of 1993, I completed university, started my teaching career, moved around the ACT and New South Wales a little, before finally settling in Canberra, meeting my husband and having our family. I am currently working as a Teacher-Librarian in the Junior School of a large Preschool – Year 12 school in Canberra. Prior to this role, I have been a class teacher for many years.
When I first heard that I was going to Sweden, I wasn’t very excited. I didn’t know much about the country and having learnt French for six years at high school, really wanted to go to a French speaking country. I wondered what I would do with a language that only eight million people in the world speak. I still wonder that! Unfortunately, it’s not a very useful language! I have been back to to Sweden four times, most times staying with my original host family and still feeling close to them. I can still speak a little Swedish, but it doesn’t assist my life very much!
Ironically, my husband was a Rotary Exchange Student several years before me, also to Sweden.
He has been back to Sweden about nine times and still maintains close contact with his host family and contact person’s family. With both of us having interest in the country, it makes it easy to return.
I have fond memories of Sweden and still take an interest in the country. It is my “second country” when it comes to international sporting events! I hope to continue visiting the country in the future – the next trip will hopefully occur in 2018. My husband and I hope that our children will develop an interest in other cultures and languages as they get older, and possibly explore the world as we did.
Thank you so much to Wollundry Rotary for giving me the opportunity to explore the world and immerse myself in a culture – it has certainly had a huge impact on my life and being open to new experiences and people from around the world. “
Sergeant
Sergeant was Peter Crozier who had a merry time extracting money. No topic was ignored from Council elections to golf, from Mens Health to the Show, and of course the Dogs. Even that awesome group the Rugby Men’s Choir drew fire, as did the new $5 note. The coins rattled into the box incessantly.
And David Pyke took exception to the tone of a letter he received earlier in the week. Nuff said, but the matter will be referred up the line.
