President’s Report 14th August 2018

In relation to the drought situation some members were asking about the process where they wish to assist farmers by providing support in a physical manner and in a professional capacity. It is suggested that those members interested in providing that type of support please contact Aussie Helpers who coordinate volunteers for rural support.

Rotaract Club change over dinner (tape 2) is planned for Monday 27 August 6pm for 6.30pm at the Union Club Hotel Baylis Street. Clare Lawlor has extended an invitation to all members to attend the dinner. Separate e mail will be forwarded providing details.

Congratulations to David Benn for taking on the role as district contact person for the Drought Appeal as requested by DG John Glassford. David has extensive experience in the agricultural sphere and he has many contacts in the industry. David is aware that he can call on some members of our club for assistance in his district role due to their past experience.

Next Board meeting is Monday evening 20th August at 5.30pm. It is requested that Chairmen of various committees have their reports to their Directors by Wednesday 15th August.

Rotary Information

Rick Priest came to the podium and had no Rotary information but he discussed a new app that he will be investigating.  It allows for significant reductions in fuel prices when purchasing at Caltex Petrol Stations.   The app is Fuelpay and he and Paul will look at it and get back to the members with further information.

Irene's Hosting Roster

Neil Pinto thanked Paul Milde for his help with getting a roster out for spending time with our exchange student Irene.

Neil suggested having Irene share your experiences … a meal, golfing, travelling or anything that you are doing that you think she would enjoy.  All Australian experiences are new to Irene … especially if you are doing anything on a farm, etc.

If you feel that you cannot be part of hosting Irene, please let Neil know and he will take out off the roster.

Gears and Beers Update

President James introduced Phil MacIntosh for an update on Gears and Bears.  Phil noted that we have $196,000  in the bank from registrations, sponsors etc.  No expenses have been paid yet and we have 1450 registrations.
He called on David Byfield to speak to the rosters and schedules for the various shifts .  David encouraged everyone to sign up as the schedules need to be filled.

Phil reminded members that Paul Murray is looking for old laptop computers that we can use for the Gears and Beers registration.  He also said that various organisations want to give us money to link their promotions with our event.  He noted that Wagga Wagga City Council has given us $10,000 plus additional credits.
He said that many organisations have expressed an interest in the event and wanted to participate . He concluded saying this event will be here before we know it and we need everyone in the club to participate.

Sergeant Session

David Benn came to the podium as Sergeant. He reminded members that  the Bush Fire Season is quickly approaching and he recommended an app entitled “Emergency Plus”.

He started his session  by asking Irene to carry the box...to help her get to know the members.  Puk assisted her.  He proceeded to fine:

  • Peter Crozier for what he described as a lame joke
  • The BBQ team from the markets (Pat Ingram. Etc)
  • He fined everyone who cannot speak Taiwanese/Chinese
  • He quizzed members on a long mathematical question that had an answer of 12,345,678,987,654,321.
  • He provided little known facts about statues of men on horses in parks.  If the horse is rearing (both front feet up), the man died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the man died of wounds after the battle.  If the horse is standing with all four legs on the ground, the man died from natural causes.
David finished his session with a poem about Aussie Slang for the benefit of Irene.

Drought Appeal Communications Co-ordinator

David then went on to talk about his appointment as District Drought Communications Co-ordinator  He noted that this is not a competition between districts or clubs as to who can raise the most money.  He said that each club should do what is in the best interest of their club and community.

Each club is being asked to identify specific members to be assigned the position of Club Drought Coordinator.  He recommended that Stuart Herriot, Tim Hutchins and David Post would be excellent coordinators for Wollundry.  He also said anyone else that is interested is invited.

There were a few questions about Wollundry would be accepting contributions from the community for the drought and David said “most definitely.”  He said that the District had recommended that contributions be made to RAWCS in partnership with Channel 9 and the National Farmers Federation.
