Presidents report week No 23

  • The Rotaract Trivia night is on Friday December 6. Congratulations to Michael Knight. We are likely to have at least 4 tables of 8.
  • Our Food and Wine golf team are heading into the Christmas break in 4th position of the  Navigate event. The top three teams share in the mid-season spoils so we are expecting big things from those players who are yet to play. The B team of Fozzie, Hodgey etc.  are battling along but hopefully will come good in the important part of the season after the Xmas break.
  • There are 65 attending the Xmas function. If you have not paid the $10 per head please do so today. Adrian has the details of those who have not paid
  • Our Food & Wine committee meeting was held last night. Things are progressing well under the guidance of Andrew Puckeridge.
  • DG John McKenzie was in Wagga last week to address the Group7 Presidents meeting. The submission we submitted regarding Club District subs was raised and the District committee and John McKenzie are reluctant to grant any relief to members Clubs. They intend to transfer all remaining 9700 funds to the new District. That is likely to be about $50K. That surplus is after our District will have contributed $45K to the new District before the end of June 2020. Under no circumstances is the District Board acting in the best interests of 9700 Member Clubs.

We need an additional Bulletin Editor. We have four and would like an additional person to share the workPlease give this matter serious consideration. Peter MacKinnon has offered to help but has done so for some years and would like a break. You do not need high powered computer skills

Guest Speaker

Sarah Surbeck was Inbound Rotary Exchange student at Wollundry Rotary in 1987/88. Due to our extensive Library and Filing system, we have a photo from that era, and she hasn't changed much.

Peter Crozier was asked to introduce Sarah, and told us that on day one of her exchange, he jokingly set a 6.00am curfew. She rocked up home at 5.50am, but she was 18yo, so that's OK. I imagine Emily took a mental note of this requirement.

Sarah kept referring to a 10 minute restriction on her presentation, but we wish that she had been allocated twice the time. She named her host parents as the Hornibrooks, The Croziers, The Col Woodens and The Alan Cotterills.

After returning from Australia, Sarah attended University in Sioux City, and after 4 years graduated in a course studying Health and Wellness, with emphasis on Corporate Health Promotion.
When she graduated, Sarah moved to Mt Vernon, Indiana, working Health Fitness Corp, on a GE plastics campus. From there, up to St Paul, Minnesota, and a job with the 3M Corp. More recently, Sarah has worked in Community education, a part time job to spend more time with her children. She is heavily into fitness and swimming programs.

She met and married Mark in 1995, while in Indiana, and had two children, John (c1998) and Emily (c2000) There were a series of slides with photos of visitors from Australia, and the Woodens and the Croziers were well represented. Emily has been on an exchange during her University of Kansas studies, doing a semester at Wollongong Uni, and will return home to USA early in December.
Mark is a senior mechanical designer, and works for Crown Ironworks. She gave a recent job as an example - he designed a plant for oilseed production. This takes him overseas extensively, including England, Brazil and China.

We had a bit of a geography lesson on Minnesota, and were fascinated that the state population is 5.6 million. The twin cities of Minneapolis and St Paul have 3.2 million people, but travel times from the Carlton home are 10 minutes to St Paul, 20 minutes to Minneapolis. The State has 10 thousand lakes, and that's a lot of ice to skate on.

Sarah was quick to point out that they are sports mad in Minnesota, with professional teams in six disciplines. Her family get involved, but I fail to get excited by Ice Fishing - Sarah agrees.

The question session was along predictable lines. Peter Clucas asked about the snow season, and then Mark Carlton was given a chance to dish out the dirt. He declined, because he was so far from home, but said all the right things about having his daughter study in Australia.

Emily described her courses at Wollongong, 2 units in Psychology, and a climate change subject. She roomed with 3 Australians - and survived the experience. She managed to have some travel experiences and enjoyed the experience.

President David made the point that we have had exchange students return, and they have all developed into great ambassadors for the scheme - most impressive people and thankful for the experience. Burmo moved the vote of thanks, pointing out that there are only about six or seven survivors from Wollundry 1987, but a new generation of our club are now richer for todays contact.

Our Meeting

The Grace was sung again today, in a boisterously happy and enthusiastic manner. The Toast to Prince Andrew's mother followed, and rituals concerning visitors, guests and rotaryannes (they were mentioned) were given an airing.

Paul Murray has returned from his USA trip, but has ended up in hospital. We are advised that he should recover, but is not yet ready for visitors. We wish him well, and know that Carolyn will keep his spirits up - our proxy visitor.

Our charter president was acknowledged, and he seized the opportunity to promote his current affiliation - Probus, and more specifically Murrumbidgee Combined Probus. This may appeal to our Senior members, but if that is an essential criteria, none of us would qualify - we aren't old enough

Graham with Betty, was one of the families hosting Sarah back in 1988. It was great to have him back, even for a visit.

Paul Milde was running around chasing his tail. He had a job on reception and the Christmas cakes had arrived as well.

After Hawkins comes Heriot........

Stuart Heriot was our sergeant. He ran a commentary on the procedures, methodologies and financial outcomes of the job, a preamble to the parade. During this period, the sound of coins dropping into the fine box was very evident - contrasting the near silence as jokes were told!!!!!!

I missed the news, but the Luftwagga replaced the RAAF Roulettes in the Aerobatic display at Temora last weekend, and then didn't show up. Must be because the Mooney is spluttering on reduced pistons.

Paul Milde's role as quartermaster (procuring apparel from China) has been interrupted by the US / China trade war. Surely our international guests were the ones to fine here.
At this stage, the projected slide show on the screen started to launch unexpected new windows, and our speakers presentation shut down. With Paul Murray and Peter Davies both on leave for reasons various, it fell to Steve McCoy to rescue the situation.
Pat Ingram was identified as a budding philanthropist - money to give away? Is he running the projects committee. David Pyke failed to find a Rotary Club in Ireland for a make up. Stuart blamed a leprechaun, but other green things, like golf greens should share the blame.

This one is best remembered as an accurate quote.
"The speed at which a woman says nothing, is inversely proportional to the severity of the S*** storm that's coming"

The anecdote that relied on the visual similarity of Urine and Apple Juice doesn't warrant retelling.

At the conclusion of the applause for this parade, Stuart returned to the table, and resumed his lunch. It wasn't as warm as before.
