Presidents Report Jan 7
We have had a two week break from our regular meetings over the Christmas and New Year break. I trust that everyone had happy family get-togethers and some sort of respite from the heat and smoke. I am sure we all have friends who have been impacted by the terrible fires of the last week or so and trust that some relief is achieved in the not too distant future.

Our Food & Wine committee made the decision at a meeting on 30 December that we would not advertise for a recipient for proceeds of the Festival this year. The proceeds would be distributed to drought and bushfire appeals.

Mayor Greg Conkey AO, contacted me this morning and requested that we provide some tables and cover the costs of biscuits for a non-denominational prayer vigil at the Victory Memorial Gardens tomorrow evening at 7.30pm. The CWA would provide tea and coffee. I indicated that we would be happy to assist.

We have been active over the last few days, not so busy, but active in assisting at the Showgrounds with a BBQ and providing marquees for shade. There were large numbers of domestic animals brought from the Batlow, Tumbarumba and Talbingo regions for temporary housing. Tremendous support was provided by local vets, vet hospital staff and trainees in caring for some very distressed animals.

Other matters from the December Board meeting
  • Constitutional amendments have been reviewed by the selected members and referred to the Board. This matter will be reviewed at the January meeting
  • The Board agreed to confirm the adoption of the 80/20 rule as to distributions to Australian based and International projects. An addition to that rule was to include the words “unless in exceptional circumstances” . This would allow the projects committee and the Board to consider applications or requests vary the percentage. Of course, any amounts over $1000 will continue to need Club approval.
We need an additional Bulletin Editor. We have four and would like an additional person to share the work. Please give this matter serious consideration. Peter MacKinnon has offered to help but has done so for some years and would like a break. You do not need high powered computer skills

Congratulations and Good Luck Nick
Nick Leywood informed members that today was his last day for a year.  He has asked the board for a leave of absence.  He has been offered a position in Northern Queensland setting up a new manufacturing plant that is going to recycle plastics into other products.  Nick will be the CEO of the facility and he was obviously excited about the new position partially because of the positive environmental effect of recycling plastics and obtaining the carbon benefits.

We will be looking for a replacement as Sergeant next week.

Update from Mayor Greg Conkey

Greg Conkey gave members an update on the overwhelming generosity of this community and this club in response to the disastrous fires that have destroyed so many properties and resulted in the evacuation of many nearby towns.  The collection centre for food and other items is now at Kildare College.  Greg was there a couple days ago and they needed two minute noodles and they put the word out and within fifteen minutes they had boxes of two minute noodles delivered.  The evacuation centre is open again and renamed the Assistance Centre.

Since the start of evacuations , 1100 people have registered, and 800 people have been provided accommodations.  The overflow has gone to CSU and the RAAF base.

At the showgrounds, over 100 dogs, 34 cats, 2 goats and a tortoise, who went missing. The Vet felt the tortoise needed better facilities so she took it home for personal care.

Greg asked the club if they would be able to provide tables, biscuits and water for a prayer ceremony for the evacuees on Wednesday evening.  President Pykey confirmed that Wollundry would support Greg’s request.

SERGEANT

Michael Knight came to the podium as the Sargeant.  Michael says that the fine session is based on the presumption of guilt.  People put money in the box before they hear what they are guilty of.

He asked each table a question about the Black Sorrows … one question to Phil McIntosh’s table the birth nationality of Joe Camalarie...wrong answer.  For Phil Burgess table, Phil yelled out a number instead of the title.  Michael asked him what song was that … and Phil did not know....wrong answer.   The whole table was fined.  The LuftWagga Table was asked about which genre a certain Black Sorrows was in. ...wrong answer.

Croz was asked who was the original singer of a popular Black Sorrows cover song … Croz answered “Perry Como”!

Michael finished his session with the best joke of the year.  Click here to hear it.  (If this link doesn't work, go to the top of this page and click on "Click here to view it online.")

Update from Food & Wine Chair Andrew Puckeridge

Puck came to the podium to give an update on the Food and Wine.  Looks like we have the Black Sorrows… they have agreed to everything we have outlined in our reply and they seem to be extremely accommodating to the fee and there should not be any problem negotiating it.

Dale Allison wanted to combine the Food and Wine with a large multigroup fundraising concert event for the fires, and it was declined … not enough time to organise and we are only 3 months away from the date.

Puck asked the committee to please attend the weekly meetings and write a report as we need to be on top of everything. The meeting will be every Monday at 5:30 pm.

At the end of Puck's talk, President Pyke said that BMW had offered an amount of money  contingent upon renewing the Food and Wine contract for another 5 years and this was respectfully declined.
