Hi all, A well attended meeting today, plenty of interaction and input by members. It was good to see members who had been rostered to carry out meeting duties arrive on time and carry out the required tasks. A good Saturday Market result was reported by OIC Geoff Breust. This continued monthly return from the markets is holding us together financially at the moment. Pat and Carol Ingram have had more than their share of COVID-19 lockdown in recent times. Thankfully most of us have missed out on being locked down. John Gray gave a good insight into the history of the Wagga Wagga Rotary Club. This Club has been quite vibrant and dynamic over the years, contributing to the Wagga community in a very positive way. Later this week will see the return of one of our own. Margot and Paul Milde will return to town this weekend. Paul will be helping out at the Food and Wine Festival this weekend, and both he and Margot will be attending our meeting next Tuesday. Members indicated strong support for a ladies day at the meeting. All will be welcomed. The Food and Wine Festival All is in readiness for the Festival this weekend. All compulsory documentation has been completed, to satisfy the legalities we have to meet with Wagga Wagga City Council, Local Area Command, Gaming and Licensing NSW and NSW Health Services. All equipment hire has been effected, Wine and Food Vendors secured (albeit less than previous years due to staffing problems), Sponsorships secured and effective advertising put into place. The weather forecast is on our side, we are ready to receive an eager crowd. I am pleased to see the very positive response to requests for volunteers per way of the rosters. Thank you to the Committee for its support. A lot of hard and sometimes frustrating work goes into organising an event like this. Still some hard work to do this weekend, we are almost there. Diary Dates: The next Board Meeting - Has been put back until 28th Feb. The next Gears and Beers Meeting - Wed 16th Feb 5:30pm at Commins Hendriks. Food and Wine Festival - Frid/Sat/Sun this weekend. The District AGM - This Sunday 20th Feb via ZOOM, 6-7pm, 60% required for a quorum. Next Sat Market - Sat 12th March 2022. Today was a ladies day and several partners were there, including Paul Milde and his wife. Paul was presented with his framed certificate of honory membership for all his service to the club. Rick Priest did the honors at the meeting. He also helped at the food and wine festival.
President Richard opened our meeting with Rotary Grace and the loyal toast. He then proceeded to award a Paul Harris Fellow to Gerry Gerlach for his contribution of $1000US to the Foundation. This is a worthy recognition. Gerry not only contributed
Next came the awarding of Honorary Membership to a long standing and hard working member, Paul Milde. This was carried out by his proposer and mentor Rick Priest, who gave a great outline of Paul's service to the club before he reluctantly resigned and moved to Canberra to be closer to family. Paul is a highly regarded member and the club was very sorry to see him leave. Four ladies also attended the meeting to support Margo, (and quite a few were unable to be there but would have been if possible.) They were Margaret Priest, Angie Gerlach, Cherie Benn, and Cathy Pyke.
Neil Schirmer told us of his exchange visit to Canada during his college years. He was hosted in a small town north of Regina, Saskatchewan known as Battleford. His host family ran a 3,500 acre mixed farming property on the Saskatchewan River. The conditions are a bit different than here. They plant in May and have the harvest well over by August. After that the cold sets in and the place "looks like the Hay plain, covered in snow".
